Hi guys,

For about 7 months now ive been wanting to get a little media device downstairs setup and although im currently using my LG's blurays media player i want to get everything nicley setup on something with XBMC

Ive considered a lot of devices but a while back i read a forum saying XBMC wont run on many media players very fast because it needs to have a fast CPU but then read that the ATV520 was on of the only ones that was capable of this.

Now i know they run Android originally which id quite like the idea of on my TV but is it possible to have it boot straight into XBMC at all or can i possibly just leave it on XBMC all the time, is it stable enough to leave on and in XBMC ?

Will it run full HD files ok through the 520 or should i maybe considering looking at the 1200 ?

would really appreciate any help and advice on this

I'd just go for a Raspberry Pi.

I picked one up to fiddle around with a couple months back and it works like a charm with OpenELEC installed, hooked up the ethernet and it streams 1080p MKVs from my file server absolutely fine.

I already had an MCE remote for it, but if your TV supports CEC then you can just use the TV remote to control it.

Nice and cheap too, Pi, case, SD card and power supply shouldn't set you back any more than £45.

This, I used to use one for the exact same reason, performed perfectly well. The early builds of Rasbmc were a bit buggy but im sure by now it is perfectly good.

really thats interesting ? Rasberry pi was my first thought but then i read somewhere it was pretty slow and buggy for xbmc ?
just to clarify its not as a good "media player" i want its as a good cheap XBMC

My Raspberry Pi has been running raspbmc or whatever it is called for a few months and I've had very few issues. I leave it on all the time and just use a USB hard drive for storage. The UI isn't super responsive but for around £30 ( no case and I repurposed an old 5v switching power supply) it is so much better than using a long hdmi from my pc, which was sometimes a real pain.

As long as you stick to the built-in skin, UI responsiveness is more than acceptable, which surprised me at first as I'd heard similar reports to what you have, but no complaints here. It has no problem browsing through a large media database (10000+ entries easy), and it works with every add-in I've tried, it may have been a tad slow when using TvCatchups EPG but then again our ION boxes struggle with that too, bit of a bloater. :)

i stream my XBMC downstairs using an ouya games console, traded in a few old xbox 360 games so the box only cost £50.

Works well would say its 100% perfect but 90% of the time its epic.

And unlike the PI most skins will run very well as it has more grunt
