I've got an old remote that works with XBMC apart from I need to swap the actions for a couple of buttons around .

I've had a try with LIRC but failed to get anywhere ( apart from stopping it working altogether ) , reinstall of XBMC later and it's working again .

As it's just swapping two actions is it as simple as editing the right configuration file ?

Any ideas on where to start ?

So a bit more .....

I tried editing the keymap file - remote.xml but my changes didn't seem to have any effect

I also tried the remote on my windows 7 pc works perfectly with XBMC .... starting to wonder if it's an Ubuntu problem ??

I'm downloading a copy of XBMC and I'll try booting straight to that and see if it makes any difference .

It's over a year since I set up my xbmc remote but I seem to recall there being similar config files in more than one location I.e. A user one under /home/username/.xbmc/bla/bla and global like /etc/xbmc/bla. Try searching a bit deeper to see if there's on you missed? I'll try and poke about later and find which config files I'm using as what I've just said might be a bit vague

Could you post your remote.xml file and the output of ls on ~/.xbmc/userdata and ~/.xbmc/userdata/keymaps?

I think you might have been editing the wrong file, on my setup there are two, remote.xml seems to map codes to XBMC actions whilst another file (Lircmap.xml in my case) maps keys on my PS3 Bluetooth remote to codes that correspond to those defined in remote.xml.

Thanks

Thanks for your replies :)

As the htpc I'm trying to sort this out on is not set up right now I've been trying out the XBMC Live CD on another pc and the remote seems to work perfectly with it .

I'm going to try unistalling Ubuntu on my htpc and just run it with XBMC and see how that works .

Fingers crossed ;)

You can install xbmc live to the hdd, which is what i've done and it works great. You can also use the xbmc remote on android phones which has built in WOL :)

i need a remote (IR USB receiver) for os 7 using xbmc, can you link or tell me what will work please. Want to use it on my laptop with my logitech harmony remote.

I would have thought that any Windows Media Centre Remote Control would work ..... info from xbmc site here.

Teach the harmony from the WMC remote . Remote & reciever seem to be about £15 .
