XBMC/MakeMKV Subtitles

Hi all,

Over the last number of weeks I've been using MakeMKV to build my XBMC library up with my DVD titles. I noticed the other day however, I have the Bourne Identity for example and added it in, I deselected all the extras in MakeMKV and just kept the main film, audio and subtitles.

Everything went well, in playback of the film through XBMC in the park bench scene about 10mins in two policemen speak in a different language but the translation doesn't show up like it does automatically on the DVD. To get the translation I have to activate the English subtitles (which show the English subtitles and the translation)

This I'm sure is going to be the same in other titles as well, am I missing something or is there away to just have the translations but without full sub titles? As when I'm watching a film I don't want to have to rewind a few seconds and then switch subtitles on when a foreign language is spoken.

It might not big a big thing to some but I find it rather annoying and could put me off using my NAS and pc for this and just using my PS3 as a DVD player and stick with that :(
 
Are you sure there isn't another subtitle file which just include those parts where a foreign language is spoken?
 
Well I've checked and made sure that in the very large section of the disk where the main film is located I have ticked all English subtitles, but still no luck :(

Think I'm going to try out other films where there should be subtitles for translations only.

Another question, what will happen if I use handbrake to encode the files (only to make them smaller) will I lose the availability to have subtitles? Will converting them to an avi/ mp4 loose the subs, if so what format should I encode to in handbrake?
 
Not actually sure I have that option, well can't seem to find it anyway :(

Just read the FAQ looks like it's only BLuray that has forced subs.

Have you tried simply downloading the forced subtitles from interwebz? Various programs will be able to add them as a stream into the .MKV for you :)
 
I had this yesterday when I ripped my Episode IV disc, no subtitles for Greedo in the cantina.

On reripping, noticed that there were 4 sets of english subs. 2 labelled English Subtitles and the other 2 Director Commentary. I took out the commentary ones and left the other two.

Now in XBMC i tested with:
subs turned off - no subs (no suprise!)
English Subs 1 - All subs (English and Huttese!)
English Subs 2 - Only greedo subtitles in correct 'in movie' font

This was consistent in RotJ as well so I have now saved the setting to use English Subs 2 by default. Just need to remember to check if there are more than 1 se tof english subs.

Mancubus yea I was beginning to think the same, but to re-rip well over 80 titles is just not what I want to be doing :(

I hate to think out of all the films I've done which ones are going to have the similar issue to the Bourne film I've just done!
 
No probs,

I wonder if you can rip just the subtitles file and mux them back together, I think I've used mkvtoolnix in the past for something similar
