looking at building a cheap media PC for a family member and was thinking about using xbmc..

E6300
Intel 965 MB + intel express graphics
4GB Ram
160GB HDD

I could stick windows 7 and then install xbmc or just install xbmc..
last time I checked xbmc under windows didn't do hardware video decoding, and I am not sure the onboard GFX will do HW decoding.

cheers

When you say Media PC, do you mean that it will store and play films or just stream from elsewhere?

If its used for storage aswell i'd consider a bigger hard drive. I'd possibly also suggest something Atom/Hudson based to try and end up with a fanless solution although i don't know how these cope with HD playback.

If it's just for XBMC why not get Apple TV2 and a network drive?

Should be cheaper.

Edit, just seen the price of ATV2, stick to your original plan!

A lot of people on here use the HP Microserver as a media PC/storage server. it's an especially good price with the £100 cash back offer from HP (working out to about £160 in total)

I already have the parts I mentioned so no need to spend money, they have a external 500GB hdd that they can store films on.

the question I was really asking was
last time I checked xbmc under windows didn't do hardware video decoding! does it now?, and I am not sure the onboard GFX will do HW decoding (I will have a look into that)

cheers
