Okay I just picked up an xbone for my lad's xmas present. To be honest, he has not mentioned any games that he is really interested in, other than mentioning Halo 5 - but this is because his pal is into halo.

I'm having second thoughts about the xbone because of the cost of games - I cannot find any game keys either (the old vpn trick).

I could just take it back, be a bit richer, and set him up with a steam - cat5 cable from pc to his tv - as he seems to only want to play terraria!

What do you lot reckon?

Well you did say he specifically asked for an Xbox. Are you really just going to buy him a really long cable for Christmas? :p

Keep the X1 as it has stacks of indie games and the games do come down in price over time. He can also trade them once he is done which is an advantage over Steam. :)

How old is he?
My 11 year old loves his Xbox 360 and the main reason he loves it is because he plays with his friends. He is aware the PS4 is regarded as the better system, but all he cares about is playing with his friends and that is why we are considering an Xbox One for christmas. It's an even a case of us discussing with friends parents as I know for a fact if he is the only one with a Xbox one he won't bother with it.

Playing with his friends has improved his confidence so much and he is much happier. When he wants his downtime (from talking non-stop) he plays window mode tower defence games on his PC while watching red dwarf or the harry potter movies.

Regarding the price of games. We normally get him the latest Call of Duty and thats about it. The rest of his choices are 2nd hand £7 games and the occasional indie game from the xbox store.

I guess my point is that depending on age a console can be a great idea. Trust me it's a huge talking point at school from about 9 upwards and as bad as this may seem his closest freinds are xbox owners. All of them.

Also multiplayer games are better controlled from console. Okay this may not be a problem if he's younger, but these consoles are long term invenstments. If I let my boy play TF2 on steam he'd see a ton of rage on that chat panel. Same for COD no doubt.

When we got him a cheap PC a few years ago he played Half Life and it's his fave game ever. Still keeps asking me when the 3rd will be coming out.

Two things - you can get the games online on the India or Hong Kong stores, digital versions obviously, at slightly reduced prices.

Also, if you have two xbones (could be a friend or relative) you can very easily share digital games and live with each other. My brother and I have two consoles but we share the cost of games. Completely legal and a MAJOR selling point of the xbone IMHO

cat5e cable for xmas haha.

lol bloody terraria. I've already bought two versions of terraria, he won't touch the 360 version as he doesn't like controls.

Well I went through the xbone games with him and he couldn't single out any of them. This may have something to do with the new 3ds xl. I'm sure he will change his mind again shortly.

Yeah, I will find out what his pals are using but I just cannot see the appeal of the xbone? Whereas I understand why he wants a nintendo for the exclusive games.

He's asked for an Xbox One... I don't think he'd be overly impressed with a cable to stream from Steam to a TV :p

Obviously its up to you but - remember xbone games are half price if he can find someone to share with or if you get a second console.

I'm still playing the 360 that I bought in 2006 - its a long term thing.

PS - I'd make the same two arguments about PS4!
