Im thinking of buying an external HDD for my 360 , mainly for films and music

are there any HDDs that work well out of the box with the xbox ? any i should avoid ? do they all need formatting to fat32 still ?

any suggestions/guides much appreciated :)

I'd buy a USB host powered one (and I did :)). More convenient. There is a 4GB file size limit as the 360 will not recognise NTFS.

However, Microsoft in it's wisdom decided to allow the 360 to recognise the Mac drive file system, which doesn't have a 4GB limit. So that's what I use on my ext. hdd.

Just need to buy MacDrive so your PC will see the drive. Unless you're a Mac user of course.

ive never used a mac so i have no idea what a mac drive is sorry lol, which particular one did you buy ?

Sorry, should have made myself clearer. "Macdrive" is software which allows you to read, write and format hard drives to the Mac system, on a PC.

Quote from their help:

"MacDrive is a powerful, fast, flexible, cost-effective and straightforward way to accommodate your Mac/PC file sharing needs. MacDrive is easy to install, works immediately, and quietly provides Windows with the power to access files on Mac disks from any software, at any time."

I bought a 320GB Maxtor Basics USB powered drive. Excellent drive for the money.

Thanks for the info thats really helped me :)

I've only got 20GB HDD on my 360 with 1.6GB free and i would like to have more music on it and more space for demos and vides i should think 250GB would be fine for me :)

Would i be able to write an xbox 360 game to an external hard drive ?
