Xbox 360 and mobile internet HELP

My mate lives in a flat but the flat does not have a phone line in and he has never needed one as he just uses his mobile.

However he is now keen to play xbox live.

So I have suggested he gets a laptop and a orange mobile BB dongle and connect the laptop to the net using orange mobile internet for 15 quid a month.

Is there a way of connecting the Xbox to the laptop so he can play xbox live?

If so how does he do it?

I have no idea about consoles so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I believe Xbox Live has a ping limit. While I'm not sure what it is exactly, it's safe to say that mobile Internet is going to have way too much latency for it to be able to work at all.

Even if it could connect at all, there'd be far too much latency for games to be playable properly, it's not worth it.

Thanks

Well he wanted the interent anyway so I guess its not all bad.

How does he connect the xbox to the lappy anyway?

It would be nasty. It simply isn't feasible with that amount of latency. See if he can get Virgin Media broadband in his area as that doesn't require a land line.

If it's running Windows, ICS should do the trick. Would just need to connect an ethernet cable from the laptop to the 360 (straight through or crossover - 360 is auto sensing) then enable ICS in the mobile connection properties.

But yeah, I doubt it's even worth trying :)

It's just cable broadband as opposed to some variant of DSL. Basically it uses a different connection to your phone line so no line rental isn't necessary.

Just put his postcode in in virgins site:

Sorry. You are not in a Virgin Media cable enabled area. You cannot receive Virgin Media's award winning cable broadband

Bummer :(

Works, done this for a friend about 2 weeks ago. He was using a Vodafone dongle and he even managed to get an open NAT status.

Been using vodafone mobile broadband for the last three months and live works pretty much fine all the time. There are certain times in the evening when it goes it a bit laggy but thats it.

Dont always get and open nat setting, but been playing COD4 fine for about 2 hours this morning. not tried many other games through it though....

Never mind the ping, what about the data usage limits and charges?

Doesn't sound like a good idea to me. I'd get a landline from one of those cheap non-BT providers (TalkTalk, the Post Office) and get some broadband.

I played everquest via tmob`s web n walk hsdpa for the last twelve months without issues. Pings are not gonna be fantastic for certain types of games but I averaged around 200-300ms which was absolutely fine for me.

Which would be almost useless for almost all Xbox Live games. Even if you felt it was playable from your side, I pity anyone who ended up playing with you.

Ouch. Why bother when DSL or Cable broadband isn't that expensive and tends not to have silly data caps or massive pings.

Yeah, it would be worse than playing against Americans. :( :D

Bear in mind this was on a US server so euro servers would no doubt be quicker, though by how much is anyone's guess.

Tested this the other day on xbox live, got a few friends online on COD4 Joined as a group onto a normal TeamDeathmatch, everyone said I was fine no lagging or anything...
