You can get Xbox 360 arcades for around £140 now, but as far as I know, they don't come with a HDD and to get on live, you need a HDD because the update is big.

Since Microsoft have changed prices around, are the arcades comming with HDD's?

Cheers

They now come with 512MB flash ram built in so NXE is stored on that and you still have around 300MB left after NXE install so plenty of space available as long as you do not want to install any games (other than small LIVE arcade games).

Really? Hmm, might stop me from buying a 2nd hand Elite or something now then. However, how would I know if the place I buy the 360 arcade from is with the inbuilt NXE?

I'm looking on a certain site now but it says '# 256MB of memory - useful for storing games and other entertainment content'

I can see a certain place doing a Xbox 360 Premium Console, with GTA4. That's a 20gb Harddrive built in for £165 delivered. £25 more than your arcade, But has a hard drive and game.

You could Sell the GTA4 somewhere as new and make some money back too if you wished.

I can get an Arcade with 2 new games for £140 delivered, new. However, what I ask is how do I know if it has inbuilt NXE? I'll only buy it if it's online capeable without forking out for a HDD

NXE fits on the memory card with the Falcon Arcade so either way it makes no difference.

How big does the memory card have to be though? Bigger than 256MB? Because I can't see any arcades that are bigger than 265MB
That's because Falcon Arcades only come with a 256mb Memory Unit, looking around the web everywhere seems to say the NXE Update is 128mb or so.

From the Xbox site FAQ

The system update is going to download some stuff to your hard drive or memory unit, so before you start the update you're going to need either a hard drive or a memory unit with 128 MB of free space.

Didn't you say in your other thread that your previous 360 had died? Can't you use the HDD from that? If you didn't mention that then my mistake!

If you absolutely have to have a hard drive and don't want to buy a second hand system or an Elite then just buy it seperate to your console. Also even if it's an older box and you have to download the NXE then it's no big deal. I think you'd have to upgrade to a HDD at some point if you want any sort of proper DLC because 512MB just isn't enough nowadays. :)

Just fired up my 360 with the Hard Drive and Memory Unit unplugged and NXE still works without them, i think the extra storage is only needed for the install file and extras like the Avatar Editor.

You must be thinking of the wrong person mate because I didn't say my 360 broke or anything previously, I've owned one before, but ages ago.

When I bought my arcade a while back, the guy at a certain shop said I'd *NEED* a separate HDD for the NXE to work, because alone the arcade didn't have enough space. :S

So if I go out and buy an Arcade, I'll be able to get the NXE on it without any issues and once I've purchased my XBL, go online without any issues?

He works in that certain shop, therefore he knows about as much as much as a snail.

Yes, and Yes.

I've just called up a shop and asked them if I needed a seperate HDD for NXE, and they also said I do, and internal memory wouldn't be enough.

I'm fairly sure they're wrong, but either way i still wouldn't recommend anyone buys a 360 without a hard drive unless they have one already from a failed unit or something.

Well what is the plus to having to having a HDD with your 360? I aren't too bothered about having games installed on the HDD.

I can always get a HDD some other time anyway, just aren't budgeted for it this week.

makes the console quieter when games are installed.
lets you download movies and games from live.
some games require a large amount of space for save games, i used loads of room when playing fallout and oblivion

At least 3 of my top 10 games on the 360 are from the Live arcade, you could probably fit one of them on the built in storage but shadow complex for example is a whopping 835mb, which will never fit on there. Also many games have some very good DLC that would never fit onto the built in storage. Basically to really experience all that the 360 has to offer you need a hard drive.

Also as above installing games is a very important feature for me, it reduces console sound and decreases loading times. Also outlined above some save games are pretty large, and finally there's a very small amount of games that are optimised to be cached to a HDD as you play (most notably Halo 3 and GTAIV). Anyone who has ever tried playing GTAIV without a hard drive will most likely attest to the fact that it is an inferior experience with magical, invisible trees.

I'd check the price of HDDs before you go ahead and buy an arcade, i'd be willing to bet you will most certainly buy one somewhere down the line and i'd also wager that it'd end up costing more than just buying a 360 that comes supplied with a hard drive. Maybe saving up for an extra week or two would be a good idea?

It was one of THE worst marketing decisions by MS not to have a HDD included as standard with the 360. Although you can get by without one, why would you want to?

As others have said here, without one, you're severely limiting the 360's potential.

By all means buy an arcade*, but try and get a HDD as soon as possible, would be my recommendation.

*But not at the new price! As mentioned above, a new elite at the new price point of £199 would be better.
