Catchy name huh? :p "COOLER KING"

Just noticed this on Gameplay and I thought "Great, another rip off cooling device to con the masses" but curiosity got the better of me and I had a look.

It turns out that as well as a 'cooler' its also an all in one AV out incorperating component, composite, vga and s-video and a USB hub.

Now whilst the cooler means nothing to me having all those output options as ports on the back of the console is very appealing. No faffing around with different bespoke cables. Therefore I could take my 360 to a mates house, whip the leads out of his DVD player and slap them in the 360. Much better than fiddling around reaching behind his rather expensive and rather large 50" TV which is what has put us off doing this so far.

Also it means that I can leave both the VGA ad Composite cables plugged into my LCD TV and swap between them at the flick of a switch to play original xbox games with the sound going to my amp via the optical output being unaffected.

The final decider for me (as you can guess I will be buying one :o ) is a USB hub. Personally I have the following that need a usb connection- Play and charge, KVM, wireless adaptor and mp3 player. As you can see 4 into 3 doesn't go so its a case of pull out the mp3 if I need to charge a controller. Its also very appealing to be able to tuck all my usb cables around the back.

As for the 'cooling' well tbh I wouldn't even think twice about removing the fans as I doubt they do anything at all. Certainly if they are noisy they are coming out / being disconnected.

So anyone else think this is a good little gadget?

I think it's one of tose things that if it suits you (like it does yourself) then it's bril. If not it's a waste of time :). I think the output options are the best bit though.

I've been seriously thinking of getting the Nyko Intercooler 360 for my future Xbox360. I want it to last for as long as possible whenever I get it. It does seem to lower the temps a little but this Cooler King just seems like one step too far for me. Nice idea, but not for me! :)

If I bought one one I would have to buy seperate cables in addition to the HD Composite and VGA cable i have. Its a shame MS didnt release the 360 with all those ports already in the back of it.

All the connection options seem great, not fussed about the extra cooling though.

It's of no use to me but I can certainly see where it would be of use.

As Rhys said, I'd have to buy new cable and it really is a shame MS didn't just release the 360 with those connection options. It would have saved LOTS of hassle trying to find component and VGA cables after release.

only thing putting me off, there doesnt appear to be anywhere for the wireless adapter to connect to. if there was a bit on the top/side for the adaoter i would defo get on without a doubt, but im not keen on having the wireless just hanging off the back.

Yeah I noticed that. Think it might have to be some sticky velcro which is a bit of a shame.

EDIT- having said that mine doesn't clip on properly anyway :(

EDIT 2- one slight concern is how it gets its power as it doesn't seem to leech it off the incoming power supply like the Nyko one. I'm not sure I fancy putting too much load through the single USB on the back

It's the same with all consoles isn't it - it must be a deliberate ploy to generate extra revenue. There's no technical reason it can't be done. There should be a law against it really... any other electrical item like a TV or DVD player all have standardised outputs, but games consoles are an exception.

Well I've been having a read up (its been a slow afternoon) and it appears that as I thought the power for the two fans and four USB ports is drawn from the single USB on the back of the 360. Thats quite a load for the single 5V output of the USB.

I am still tempted to buy one and just whip the fans out of it, therefore reducing the load... hmmm....

I would wait until someone else buys one and then realises that it doesnt produce the same quality as the offical cables and its consigned to the bargain bin.

Though it's a nice idea, for £25 it doesn't sound as though it would be made with the best components in the world, though that's a guess, so the VGA / component might have a crappy picture quality, and you'd be forced to use them. I may well be wrong, but it could happen.

I've got the Nyko Intercooler, and it appeared to cause me a few boot up issues with my 360. With the intercooler attached I would every now and again upon boot get a one red light. I've removed it and since the problem has never reoccurred. So as it seems the power brick didn't like the extra stress caused by the intercooler.

Sounds like a good plan to me ;)
