hi all just wanted to know what your verdicts are on the addon coolers you can bye for the xbox 360 are they worth it? and if you think so which one would you recomend? as i may get one.

p.s must be sutible for laying down position BUT please post others for verticle position as i aint the only one thats interested (or am I?).

From what I've read they do more damage then they do good. One story I've read is that one melted at the point where it plugs into the power slot and totally wrecked the 360 because it was made from cheap components. They also seem to make little or no difference what so ever to the tempretures inside the 360.

What's the point in buying one of the coolers, you can't even see what temperature it's running at in the first place.
I'd put money that it's hardly cutting down the temps and it's just making the 360 even more noisy.

The only cooler I have seen which appears to be half decent is one by joytech I believe. The 360 sits on it (rather than the unit attaching to the back of the 360) in a verticle position and the fans blow air into the 360 at the bottom. (heat rising effect etc).

The base also has space to store games and a slot to charge a battery pack).

I have used one of these coolers and they are damn noisey, but to be fair they do extract more hot air than the built in ones and do reduce the case temps.

I read a review somewhere where they tested the temperatures across different parts of the 360 with a cooler attached; and they found that on average it reduced component temperatures by 4-5 degrees.

I know a lot of people on here will say they are totally ridiculous and are not required and I can see their point, but I would suggest you try one and make up your own mind.

:)

I saw one the other day that interested me as it also connected to the multiout and then split into VGA/Component/S-Video/Optical/4xUSB etc - I thought this was genius as it then allows you to use existing 3rd party leads ie a regular VGA lead. For me this allays the expense of buying multiple leads if you use the 360 on various TV's/displays around the house.

Ah, just seen it at a competitors website, it's the "Xbox 360 Cooler King".

Would it not create like a turblence affect, making things even worse cooling wise? I wouldn't get one anyway, mabye the one with the extra connections but disable the fan. As there bloody noisy as they are.

Is it not loud enough for you as it is? :p

Personally I wouldnt bother, if the 360 isnt adequately cooled and breaks then its MS's fault and their responsibility to replace the unit.

Yet we all cool our CPU's with aftermarket coolers, and expect the retailer/manufacturer to replace the CPU if it dies...I know we overclock those, but still :p

I can only imagine the coolers that attach to the back will cause lots of turbulence as the back fans will pull on the fans on the inside, making it all very inefficient! I like the sound of the joytech that blows air into the bottom, but I can't see it on the Joytech site...

Yes, but an aftermarket cooler still invalidates your warranty IIRC, its just no one tells the manufacturer that they used a 3rd party cooler. Besides, a PC is your machine, your free to take the side off as and when you please, whereas a 360 invalidates the warrantly if you take the side off, so if microsoft havent put adequate cooling in their machine then its only their fault as we cant take the side off to add extras.

You'd only need more cooling if it was overheating and crashing and if it was doing that you'd get it replaced wouldn't you?

These products must have come around through some hysteria over heat issues or something.
