Hey all, can a cheap bog standard xbox 360 Core (no harddrive, no nothing, just the console) be used as a media centre extender ? to play films off my HTPC ? I know my premium console can and is used for that.

3 Questions:

1) will it be able to accept 'transcodes' (from transcode 360 through MCE) with no harddrive?

2) will having 2 xbox's on my network effect it all ? I know I can only use one account on one console at a time, but as I said I wont even connect to live with it, just use it as a HTPC extender

3) Can MCE (with) transcode, be able to transcode to 2 xbox 360 consoles at the same time ?

Asking just to make sure, as I may get a bog standard core console only to use as a HTPC in my bedroom, and keep my premium downstairs

Im 99% sure Core's can still use the Media Centre side of things, and afaik the Transcode is done the PC end not the Xbox end so having no HDD should be a problem.

I wouldnt like to definately say - Cores have dropped in price now though to £199.

Have you ever thought of getting a standard xbox and modding it, be a lot cheaper and the Media Centre for that is superb, runs everything :)

1) Should do. I've just tested mine with music streaming without the HDD, everything's spiffy. I can't test Media Center access, but it should work.

2) No problem at all.

3) Haven't a clue. I'd be tempted to say yes, but I've no experience using multiple 360s with Media Center.

Thing to remember is that, without a HDD or Memory Unit, you can't use a profile. The only time this is an issue is with games, it doesn't stop you using MCE or music streaming.
