Xbox 360 Data Migration? Gamertag?

Do I need to recover my gamertag FIRST on my new elite and then run the data transfer disc, or do you transfer the hd data first and then recover the gamertag on the new xbox?

Does it actually matter?

Your gamertag should be transferred in the process, no need to recover it at all.

It's just a disk clone afaik.

In my experience recover your gamertag first as I did not then had issues with the gamertag profile not saving properly so had to recover it several times until it retained it on the 120GB HD.

Thought the process wipes the new drive to make sure there will not be any overwrite issues?

Sorry should have said I recovered my profile to the 512Mb flashram (its a new Jasper) as it would not retain it on the HD for some reason.
