xbox 360 - data transfer

Got a new xbox 360 s recently to replace a dead one. I've started playing on the new one by recovering my gamertag, mainly on new games i've bought since i got it.

If i get the data transfer cable, can I still transfer save games across (from my older games) to the new one? or does it only work if you transfer everything across?

I am pretty sure you can pick and choose what to transfer since the newest dashboard.

I just did mine via USB drive (just profile and save games etc) it asked me what I wanted to transfer across.

doesnt recovering a gamertag download all the savegames again anyway?

Best be getting a transfer cable then.
