20GB HDD for our Xbox 360 has given up the ghost - I even tried connecting it to the PC and it wouldn't POST.

The price of replacement hard drives is pretty shocking imo. Is there anything stopping me buying a regular SATA hard drive and using that instead? Sure it won't look pretty, but it would be a fair bit cheaper than buying an Xbox replacement.

Will only certain hard drives work?

Cheers

You can use certain types of drive (Western Digital BEVS), but they have to be flashed with a hacked firmware before they work.

WD1200BEVS drives are the only ones that work iirc and as said they need to be flashed but its doable as the software is avaible to download.

there are lots of places online that offer to do the job for you for cheaper than MS charge for a new drive also.

It has to be an official MS drive now as they released an update last week which stopped all non MS storage devices from working so you will be taking a big chance & risking a console ban !!

Not true, my 'home made' 120gb still works just fine :)
