Hi all, My friend got a xbox 360 jan 08, It has failed recently. He says it just won't read any disks. He has bought himself an elite so I said I will buy his old one from him is it still likely to be in warrenty and how does he transfer his old stuff to the elite. If it's out of warrenty how much will it cost to get fixed by microsoft or can I just buy a drive and put one in or is it not as simple as that.

Many thanks everybody!

Happy xmas!

I've heard the microsoft warranty is longer than a year, so you may well be in luck. It depends if the problem was caused by him or the console :/

If he got it modded in some way it may have voided the warranty, too, so be careful D:

Not been modded opened or anything, The sticker is still on the back the console still works turns on but just won't read any disk.

It has a 1 year warranty for all faults except 3 red lights which is 3 years so it might be possible to get it fixed by MS.

If it is out of warranty you can swap the drive out yourself but it isn't quite as simple as just putting a new drive in. Every motherboard has a unique key and this key has to be present in the DVD drive firmware otherwise it won't boot any games. Depending on what's up with the drive you might be able to just buy a replacement and swap the drive PCBs over thus keeping the firmware (and key) intact.

Chances are it's probably just the laser. Replacement laser is around £10 and dead easy to fit, I'd probably go that route first.

I thought it was the laser the drive opens and shuts how would you go about replacing the laser and where would you buy one from?

You can swap a new drive in, but it's not simply a case of just plugging it in, you have to extract the key from the firmware of the old drive and inject it into the replacement drive's firmware.

It's an easy process with the right tools and knowhow ;)

Laser swap will be the easiest option though :)

Shall get it from him, He only wants £50 for it with the hd and control so can have a look once i got it!

Yes get it from him.
If he bought it in january 08 it is still under warranty.
Telephone MS and they should repair it for free.

Shall give it a go, Going to a party at his on new year so will let you know how I get on! Sure I will have many more questions to ask!

JUst was speaking to him, He says that the drive will only open sometimes hardly ever and just won't read anything. Whats this likely going to cost to have repaired at microsoft? but there is no ring of death or anything he also said he tryed to send it away online and it says his warrenty has run out unless it's a RROD problem! Whats everybody recon?

No idea, I know he got it last jan though cause we went to game to get it I was with him!

Get it fixed for free, it's still under warranty.

If they try charging you then go about the fix it yourself route.

He says that when he went on the xbox 360 website he put the serial key or whatever from the xbox and it said it was out of warrenty. I thought it was strange!

If you have no joy with MS don't pay them to repair it, they charge £60 and you can get a new drive for a lot less than that.

Email in trust if you don't fancy doing it yourself ;)

I think you'll find that Microsoft date it for you via the seriel code you give them, Tell them it was a Present from your Parents so do not have the reciept ;)
Once they date it less than a year then they will fix it for nowt, If not get Drexel to do it as he is well known & Trusted around here.

I have an update, Got the whole thing for £30 quid from him so was pleased with that! It loads up to dash you can open and close the drive but when you put a game in there to try and play it makes strange noises and then just says can't read the disk. I have added you to msn drexel. Thinking of just putting a new drive in there? Or can they be fixed fairly easy? I was looking online you need a special tool to open the case up?
