You need a Torx T10 screwdriver, and you can get a special tool to push in the small tabs on the back of the console that hold the shell together. I personally use a small flathead screwdriver for that, but it is easier with the tool.
There are loads of guides on 'tinternet on dis-assembling the 360, it's actually dead easy and takes just minutes when you know how
As for the drive, it's definately the laser by the sounds of it, they are cheap to buy and easy to replace, so that's probably a better option if you haven't got any experience with flashing the drives.
