Howdy.

At the moment, I have my 360 plugged into my monitor via component and use an optical cable to plug into my bog standard stereo hifi (six years old now).

I can hear sound from games, video and music absolutely fine but when I try to place a DVD, the speakers emit a weird noise briefly and no sound happens. I'm assuming this is because the 360 is somehow outputting a Dolby Digital signal designed for a decoder which my hifi can't understand.

So is there any way to get sound from DVDs or will I have to go and use the RCA phono cables for sound output?

The optical signal is Dolby Digital 5.1 or 2.0, so your amp wont be able to understand it unless it is DD compliant. The phono connection is the only way you can do it.
