Guys,

What is the big deal with what drive a 360 has???

I'm looking at possibly buying a second hand 360 as the prices are falling quite nicely into easily affordable territory & on some sites when I see them up for sale people's first question alwasy seems to be what drive is fitted & they all seem to favour the Toshiba/Samsung drive so I just wanted to see if there was a reason for this?

Seems a bit daft to me so long as there is a drive fitted & it works I'm not bothered :p :p

The reason is that some makes/models have hacking advantages. Needless to say, this is not the forum to discuss, but for 99% of people, it doesn't matter.

They are also quieter. I can testify that fact, my friends Xbox360 is much quieter than mine, however, my Xbox360 is about 1/2ft infront of me and I don't notice it when playing.

How do you tell which drive you have?
By certain holes in the tray. I am not sure which are which, though I am sure there are reference files on the Internet. I don't think new ones use Hitachi anymore, though I've been wrong twice before.

Hitachi drives are still in use , at the moment it's random as to what you get.
Yep, same as the DS screens. There will always be multiple manufacturers for certain components liek DVD drive. It's whatever is cheapest at that time in the area.

From reading other sites it seems the types of optical media the drives can read depends on the drive. Might be an issue if you play home movies/CDs etc. But then again who doesn't have a standalone DVD player? :p

I haven't heard any other drive but the Hitachi in my one. If you like your quiet, pray you don't get one!
