Hey, have been looking recently at maybe replacing the fan in my old style 360 as it's main down fall is its jet engine style noise

Just wondering if anyone has done this and can confirm it is much quieter etc?

Thanks

Its easier to just sell it & buy a 360S. All the other even the Jaspers are not 100% quiet.

Even the 360S is not quiet!! (I bought one the other day to replace a Jasper Arcade I am getting rid of) & there is still a low fan noise you can hear which ramps up a bit when the console gets hot.

Some earlier 360's had Nidec fans which are much better but most came with the Delta fans which are a joke noise wise

You cannot easily find any silent fans to fit a 360 either which is just ridiculous. I tried to mod my old box last year but it RROD after a while as the fans would not let it work cool enough in hotter weather or when the central heating was on!!

I believe there are Talisman fans out there that are supposed to be better and quieter but I've not used them.

One option, and something I intend on trying is water cooling.

One of my recent repairs have had the fans wired from 5v to 12v, now they are noisy! :( but they also keep it 20'c cooler in the case! :)

just to throw this out tehre as i was never aware of it, you can install the game onto the hard drive which will mean the disc drive never has to spin and thus getting rid of most of the noise from the 360. on the xboxS i think you have to push Y on the xbox dashboard when the play game screen is in front, and then click install from disc. takes abot 1 minutes to do

I bought a Talisman last year they are definately not much quieter than the stock fans after a little while they whine a lot more in fact! It will not run on low RPM for long without overheating so you have to put them on high RPM which is very noisy!

360S even with games installed to HD it does whine a little still they are not 100% silent at all as if you put it in a cabinet it heats up & the fan RPM increases rapidly so noise goes up as well.

After a think about it, i think it may just be dvd rom spinning up, might try that install to hard drive thing to get around that, but it's the original 360 so only a 20GB hard drive =/

If the warranty is done look for Nidec fans they're the quietest OEM, Delta being the worst imo. Make sure you have the right pin connector as there are two variants both of which seem to be on an auction site at the moment.

I think i wont bother with the fan now, but i have a question, can the xbox copy to the hard drive natively? doesnt need any installed etc?

not that i'm aware of. just click Y when you are on the disc on the dashboard and then you should get the optino to install from disc. then when you play it it'll only need to check the disc is in the drive once and from there on will use the hard drive.

The 360 copies an image of the disc to the HDD, so there is no lengthy install like on the PS3, it takes about 5 minutes and eats about 5-6gb of your HDD. But it's well worth it.
IIRC the only game it doesn't improve loading times of is Halo 3, due to the use of the HDD to cache information. Other than that, it's quieter and quicker so no reason not to if you have the HDD space spare.

Will definately be doing this, it was the main reason i've started hated the 360, like a jet engine just to play a bit of reach or something, cheers tony

yeah i first tried playing mass effect on brothers xbox late at night. it was so loud i couldn't heard the people and as the whole game is about the talking i quickly got bored of it. until then i discovered you can install from disc made a huge difference

Sorry to bump an old thread but I got the Talismoon Whisper this week. I had the Delta fans (2 year old now Xbox360 ) but they had a high pitched whine that was driving me mad. Now "Whisper" these are not lol, just as loud but a different tone.
Main thing is how cool it's running now and how much air they push out. I can live with the noise and at £10.00 I think it's worth it if you opened your 360 before.
