Hi, so I'm playing PGR4 today and suddenly the game freezes and there are black and white lines all over my screen. I turned it off, and back on again, to find that the Xbox intro thing had also frozen with the lines all over it. I tried removing the hard drive and then it seemed to boot fine, got into the game and the same thing happpened again.

It looks like this:

Oddly there are no red rings, so I'm guessing I can't send it back to Microsoft. Is there anything I can do to fix this? I havn't tried any other games, could it be to do with playing from the hard drive?

Help appriciated :)

it really isnt for someone who isnt that technical though. i wouldnt fancy opening mine up, far to many fiddly bits

There's really nothing technical about it. If you can manage to hold and turn a screwdriver, that's about as tough as it gets. I would be seriously worried if any member of this board couldn't manage that ;).

Hehe, nope :). Very small flat head screwdriver (jewellers size kinda thing). Slide it in between the pin and the leg of the clamp > twist > clamp leg pops off. Once you've done two legs, the others just fall off.

Anyone got a decent xclamp guide then? I got a slight graphics glitch in GOW2 today, worried mines heading in the same direction.

These guys are spot on correct. Mine was doing exactly that, but sometimes I'd get the RROD. Get yourself and xclamp repair kit. It comes with all the bolts and washers you need. Its just a case of opening it up and swapping the xclamps with the bolts. Its not too tricky, just pace yourself and youll be fine. Try and change the thermal paste whilst you're in there too. Once the bolts are fitted, you may need to towel cook your xbox for 20mins to resit the gpu. Mines been fixed for about 2 months since i did this fix. :)

you could just cover it in a towel and force it to rrod seeing as its on its way out already

Or just fix it yourself and gaurantee it never happens again. Much faster than waiting for a warranty repair, and actually improves cooling due to better heatsink installation and if you have any sense better thermal compound. Anyone who has had the heatsinks off from a stock 360 knows how bad a job Microsoft have done with the thermal material.

thats weird mine just crashed also playing pgr4 :p
rrod
i have an ersa reflow machine at work so i take it thats what the mod does to the bga chips?
might have a crack at reflowing them myself, also have an inspection machine which we use to inspect the balls of the bga chips.

Hmm I did google a few ways to fix it myself, I could try doing it, I've changed a heatsink on a graphics card before :) But when I mess about with it tomorrow if I get some awesome red rings I may as well just send it back to microsoft.
