Sorry if this has already been asked but im considering buying the xbox 360 4gb console. Was wondering whether I have to buy an official xbox 360 hard drive to upgrade it in size, or can i do like PS3 and buy a cheapish laptop hard drive to replace the 4gb already inside.

there are hacks you can use to use your own hdd (or a small array of market hdds, with a flashed firmware on them) in an xbox system, but this will void your warranty- you will need to buy an xbox hdd.

I bought a third party 120GB drive for about £25. Bargain. That was for a regular 360, but I imagine I could crack it open and use the drive in a new S model.

You can do this :) My friend bought an old 120gb HDD and pulled it out of the case to put in his S. He put a something under the drive as its a bit smaller than the compartment on the S to stop it sagging on the sata/power connections but it works fine

I bought a cheap used 120gb Hdd and put it in my slim 4gb

Mine came from an elite, you will need 2 sizes of t6 screwdriver to remove it from the case but it is plug and play. Now I have 4gb of flash and 120gb of mechanical

hacked hdd will not void warranty of the xbox. they tell you to remove the hdd before sending it out to them, obviously you wont have any kind of ms warranty for the hdd
