for not long now the disk reading has been a bit dodgy, however i turned on my xbox today and it has just stopped reading disks, luckily i tried to open disk tray and close it so many times bioshock managed to read. anyone know what the problem could be? and how to fix it?

ps the xbox has had the red rings before, also isnow out of its warrenty, also i have had it for nearly 2 years without it breaking now apart from the red rings which was fixed and sent back to me.

Thankyou for any help given..

I have the same problem. Got a replacement drive on the way off the bay.

Does it not read disks at all or just sometimes??

If you do go down the replacement drive route. make sure you get the same model. Need to check the label on the drive.

I'm not sure on the laser if they are interchangeable.

Also you cant just swap out the whole drive as the drive and motherboard are paired.

I'm not sure on the laser if they are interchangeable.

Samsung and Hitachi drives share the same type of laser, BenQ and Lite-on drives share another type of laser. To clarify:

Laser 'type 1' (SF HD63/HD67) = Samsung and Hitachi drives.
Laser 'type 2' (HOP-141x) = BenQ and Lite-on drives.

Cool, might try swapping the laser first when the replacement turns up. Only concern on mine is it sounds clunky and its the liteon which is supposed to be good, so not sure if it is just the laser that is at fault

To fix mine I was just going to swap the circuit board from mine into the replacement

all this stuff about replacing lasers and stuf sounds very confusing to me, im not onto the technical side of things, all i do is play the games. is there somewhere that could do it for me, or would it be easier to just buy a brand new console, cause thats what i was thinking of doing.

Microsoft will do it for £80

If you are not keen on doing it you would be better off selling just your console on ebay and buying an arcade to replace it. They are only £100

Email me at the address in my trust :)

could source a 2nd hand hd-dvd drive for it, USB it in and problem solved, not the most ideal solution though
