Xbox 360 HD question

My little brother got a brand new Phillips 23PF5321/01 LCD TV for his birthday and is having real trouble getting the xbox 360 to display in HD mode on it.

First off, it has no component input on the rear. Just a DVI-D input which is labeled PC/HD. I got him a hd VGA cable for the 360 and used a spare VGA-DVI-D converter I had lying around to connect it but whenever we go to select screen modes, hd options are not available. The text says we must have a HD ready cable to select these modes.

On using the composite input and the standard microsoft cable that came with the 360, we get the options to select HD modes but naturally the composite wont deliver a HD output.

Any ideas how I can make this lil 14 year old happy as at the moment his birthday pressie is a big let down for the poor lad.

Cheers.

Does the VGA cable come with a little switch near the connector end that changes from TV to HD - like the component cable does?

Nope- looked for that and couldn't find it. The TV is deffo HD and supports 720p.

Im baffled.

I think they can take the telly back and exchange it. Will have to mention it to them when I next go round. Poor kid is gutted as his 360 looks all washed out on the TV.

So the VGA cable will only output HD on to a monitor? As it is branded as a HD VGA Cable that outputs in 720p etc etc

Hey,

I had a Philips HD TV. The HD input was via the DVI port in the rear, with my 360 like you, I used a VGA cable and then a VGA to DVI adaptor (it needs to be DVI-I adaptor) then on the TV you need to use the "PC" channel as the Xbox only outputs an anologue signal, the PS3 for example uses a digital HDMI signal and therefore used the "HD" channel on the TV.

I see your using a DVI-D adaptor, this might have some bearing on your problem but my knowledge might be wrong?>

By jove i think you cracked it. Supposedly the DVI-D doesn't allow any HDMI handshaking so the xbox doesn't know to output in HD mode.

How much was the DVI-I adapter? Few quid from a competitor?

What resolutions does it let you select? 1360x768 or 1280x768 should be selectable.

Yeah, 1280x768 is selectable but the quality is poor and it isn't 1280x768p. It also says 'for hd output modes to be selected you need to connect a cable capable of delivering a hd signal' or something like that...

Have you had a look in the box to find the Component adapter that should have been with the TV??

You should be able to get HD with the Component adapter until you get the correct DVI-I adapter for your VGA cable.

Yeah, the DVI to YPbPr cable there but it doesnt fit to the xbox. The xbox has its own proprietary connector on the rear that provides the male composite out cables.

The DVI to YPbPr cable with the telly is male to male so nowhere to connect it :(

Just so I am 100% sure before I get this for the little fella, i need a VGA to DVI-I adapter. Not a DVI-A or DVI-D ?
