xbox 360 hdd dying?

Ok a few times now my 360 has told me that i need console updates and upon further looks everything has gone from the hdd and it says unformatted. After a few mins unplugged it works fine but i think the hdd may be giving warning signs of failing. I looked up how to transfer data to a usb stick but my pc will not see any data on the stick. I presume i need some sort of software. Can anybody tell me excactly what i need to do to copy and transfer everything i need from my 360 to pc so when i get a new hdd for the 360 i can just put everything back.

I think this is what you need.
I bought one a while back to do basicly what you want to do when my son got himself the newer black xbox 360 model.

I just did a quick ebay search, there was lots of second hand ones going cheap.

Yesss not surprised.

I think but don't quote me it only transfers from one xbox to another xbox hard drive.

There may well be an app for this but sorry I have never looked into it.

Ok well thanks for the link it has proved handy as i have a old xbox that rrod but the hdd was fine in that one so i can just transfer everything to that one.
