I want to use my PC monitor with my Xbox 360 via HDMI but I'm just wondering how would I get sound from my PC speakers without actually having to plug them directly into the monitor?

Is their some sort of cable I could buy to make it easier?

Cheers

If you use the official Xbox HDMI adapter thingie, then you have white and red phono audio cable ports.
Just plug two phono cables and use a Phono -> Stereo adapter on the one end. Then plug this stereo line into the Line In on your PC sound card.

So it can't be done without an official Xbox HDMI adapter? I was just going to use a normal HDMI cable but couldn't think in my head of how it'd work lol.

If your sound card can decode/encode optical audio then it can be done on the newer models without the adapter.
Most built in sound cards can't however.

If you don't want your PC to have to be on with it then you need a female 3.5mm to 2 RCA female Y splitter adapter cable, you would have to plug your speakers into whichever you were using though.

I've had a look on ebay and can't see anything - Any chance you could link me?

Cheers

Just search '3.5mm stereo jack to 2 X RCA phono adapter splitter UK' its a UK seller, thats the exact one I bought.

Then you also need, search for '3.5mm JACK COUPLER Adaptor Female STEREO Audio MP3 3.5'.

Although i use a VGA cable (not official) which has the white and red phono audio cables as well so you would need to get the hdmi cable that has them.

edit/ ive just had a quick look at the hdmi cables and they all seem to have a different audio thing to what I have..so think you might need another audio cable as well!

The one I linked him to will do it all, you can have HDMI and speakers connected with it.

He'll just have to remove the casing from the composite/component cable and you can have HDMI+PC speakers.

So how does the official Xbox 360 HDMI AV Cable actually get sound from my PC? Plug the red and white cables into a stereo adapter, then put that stereo adapter into my mic port of my PC?

Cheers

Not in to your mic port, but in to the line-in port. May have to unmute the line-in in your sound options.

Ok well I've just got the original cable that comes with the Xbox 360 (white, red and yellow ends) and I stripped the casing off it.

Connected my monitor via HDMI, and with the casing off the original cable it will fit along side the HDMI cable.

And I've got sound through it! This seems like the cheaper and easiest way to do it? Anyone else tried this before?

Edit - Seems a bit lose when it's connected, no big deal but I'm just going to buy an RCA adapter online for £5.

I'm stuck again now...

If I buy a RCA Adapter how would I get it working with my PC/speakers?

EDIT - Would I have to buy a 3.5mm Stereo Jack Female to Female Adapter and then plug that into the line out/mic socket and then into the rca adapter?

I had this problem a while ago, before I bought my new TV.

I used an old 360 component cable with the red, white and yellow connectors, this cable doesn't have the notch that stops you connecting a HDMI cable into the back of the 360.

I connected the component red and white cables to a triangular connector with a jack on the end--one that would fit into a head phones socket.

Then I used a 3.5mm Stereo Jack Female to Female Adapter to connect to the triangular connector to a line in source(back of my amp) via an extension cable.

I still used a HDMI as well, to get the picture.

I'm sorry if that sounds a little odd, I found it rather awkward to type, a picture would have been a lot better, but I don't have it set up this way any more.

With the above RCA adapter I linked - It will fit with an HDMI cable inserted so that part is fine.

I'm struggling with how I'm going to get my speakers working through it.

I'm wondering if I could just get a 3.5mm Jack to 2 x RCA Phono Audio Cable, plug that into my mic/line socket and then into the actual RCA adapter. Would that give me sound from my Xbox to pc speakers?

The second item you linked should work, if you connect it to the 360's component cable via the red and white connectors, and obviously the jack into the line in socket.

Careful, those links could be classed as a competitor.

Cheers,

Still a bit confused though... I'd be connecting that 3.5mm cable to the RCA adapter as pictured below
