OK, we got a new 360 for XMas. I've gone through setting the machine up, and from what I can understand we have two profiles, one for me and one for my son. We started with setting up my sons which is associated to his hotmail account, so it realised he was a kid so then force me to create an account with a credit card etc.

Regarding XBox live:-
- I'll hardly be using it online, but may do from time to time.
- I don't want adult orientated avatars/language coming down from online to my son.

What is the best way to set up the profiles/xbox live accounts to achieve this? ie:-
- Set up just ONE account on the box & Xbox live, which we share?
- Set up two accounts on the xbox, one of which (my sons?) has xbox live?

I'm a bit confused at the moment!?

I'd do it the second way, but slightly differently. - You have the live account on the internet, and he has a local account just on your Xbox.

That way you can log in and access downloads etc; he will have access to content you've installed, but not to fresh material.

But how will he play online if he hasn't got an associated Live account?

I have two profiles on the XBox - it made me - one for my son and one for me. I believe these can be given Live accounts indepedently?

I believe you can have local or internet held accounts? But I have NO idea what or how you do those!? :(

All feels very half baked!

If both you and your son plan on online play you will both need Xbox live subs, so separate accounts. Or have only one account which you share.

A local account is likely what you have now, where it is called say Neil. When you sign up to Xbox live, Neil will likely be taken, so you will need to create a online profile, i.e Neil12345 or whatever.

If you dont sign up to Xbox live, you continue to sign in as just Neil :-) With no online play capabilities...

Hope that makes sense.

Well, how I have it currently is:-
My Account - No Live account.
My Son's Account - Which is signed up to XBox Live (for a month free).

I assume my account is local? But I have no idea if his is local or remote or what!? If I want to go online I'll use his account.

To be honest I've found a number of things with the XBox half baked:-
- Instructions for downloading games (Skyrim) referring to pages/option that simply don't exist!
- Even down to the LT and LB (Left top & Left bottom) buttons on the controller being around the wrong way! ie: The LT is lower than the LB. Only Microsoft!!!

It's left trigger I thought and left bumper. Only had LT on xbox original console

Ahh! I thought (logically) left top & left bottom  That would make far too much sense and be too simple and clear of course!

Yes your account will be local. Your sons account obviously is now Live enabled due to the free month.

Never had any problems understanding the download instructions for games.

And I laughed at the LB and LT part :)

The instructions for downloading SkyRim just didn't make sense IMHO. They said Press the XBox button on the controller and go to the "Marketplace tab" (in bold) to redeem the code. Couldn't see such a tab.
