Hi all. I'm thinking of putting together a silent (or nearly) xbox 360.

I think I will replace the heatsinks (not sure what will fit yet) so I can use some bigger fans

Has anyone done or tried this?

The old version by the way not the new one

For the money you're going to need to spend to re-house it, may aswell just sell your original one, and put the funds towards a slim, which is near enough silent :p

i don't mind the look of it but hate the noise. I'd like to slap some big heat sinks on there.

I was thinking about slotting it into a htpc case possibly because its a spare and I will probably only use it as a media centre extender. Shame the LanLi case is pretty pricey and I'm thinking it could probably be squeezed into something a bit smaller. I'm always game for a custom build project lol :)

No-one had a go at it then? or even upgraded the heatsinks?

lol. I don't want to buy a new console - would be a waste of money. I have fixed the manufacturing flaws myself and it is a spare console so I might as well put it to use as a media centre extender

Investing a load of money in components for a pointless case swap is a waste. It's still an old Xbox at the end of the day. The Slim models consume approx half the power of the originals so long term you'll make the investment back in a new Slim.

Oh and a clamp change followed by a towel wrap doesn't count as fixing the manufacturing flaws.

Best of luck with it.

How long do you think it would take to make back £200 in electricity bills with the lower power?

Think were talking a VERY long time here.

It wouldn't be £200. Last time I looked it was around £160 for 250GB S, plus you'd get back £50 or so for selling the old Xbox. That's excluding the cost of heatsinks and cases that he was going to buy for the project, plus the S comes with warranty and is less likely to fail or give you earache.

He already has the case, so merly time he will be investing?

My point is, it will take a few years to save £100~ on electricty by upgrading to the S.

To all the people suggesting to buy the slim, maybe it's a project he wants to do, I'd certainly be interested in doing this, would be fun but unfortunately I don't have the money :(

What are you on about? Do you not read? When did I say that I had to buy ANYTHING? And don't insult my intelligence, I have re-flowed the GPU BGA chip so your statement about a clamp and a towel which I would never consider doing is a bit of a ** Please fully star out swear words ** one really isn't it lol. Maybe if I used the xbox 24/7 I would notice a small power saving after a few years lol

You said you were 'putting together', of which an assumption of what you do or don't already possess can be made either way :p

what do you expect lol, Mr Skoda is assuming that I have no idea about electronics & repair which is far from the truth.
