XBOX 360 Live - Idiot asking.

Hi

I have looked into this, but being something of a PC Chimp, I'm resorting to posting.

I have Broadband, which connects to my PC via the one ethernet port it has, and a usb port.

My '360 is connected to my pc monitor [I switch the VGA cable], and hence all the necessary items are in close proxomety.

What is the best way to connect up the '360 to use the 'net - I don't mind switching cables etc.

Does my PC have to be on simultaneously?

I did simply plug the USB and ethernet wire from the modem into the 360 and attempted to set up Live, but it didn't detect a ISP address.

Any help would be appreciated [simpleton-proof please].

It may be handy in your situation to get a router with a built in modem that way you have:

A Router - with two Ethernet cables one into PC one into XBOX would make life easier

Not sure how the 360 reacts to having a USB Broadband modem plugged into it - Not sure if it is even possible as it will probaly need drivers to run?

The USB on the 360 is only for controllers, keyboards, MP3 players and the Official wireless adapter, you wont get a normal USB modem working via the USB ports.

You really have three choices. The first being using the ethernet cable that comes with the 360 and plugging it directly to the modem, but you say you've already tried this without success.

Second, you could try connecting the Xbox360 ethernet to your PC ethernet, then using internet connection sharing, with the PC on, let the 360 get online via your PC.

Thirdly, there's the router option, where you plug your modem into the router, and both your 360 and PC into the router also, and eliminating the need for your PC to be on when you connect to Live.

Forgive my ignorance, If I plugged the Ethernet straight into the 360, where would the USB lead from the modem go?

Do I need both the USB and the ethernet cables from my modem into my pc for surfing, or am I doubling up anyway?

If I used a router, would this also suit USB / Ethernet Modems?

You need one or the other, not both for the internet to work. Which is it you're currently using on your PC? (you can probably check by yanking out one of them, and seeing if the net is still working :p )

I'm not sure if modems like that work when using both inputs, but try connecting your 360 to the ethernet, leaving the USB in your PC. It may, or may not, work. You might want to try and switch the modem off, then on again after a few seconds once you've connected the 360 to it, just in case.

(I'm no networking master, so I don't 100% know what's going on, I hate networking :p)

Best option is to buy a switch and connect it to your modem.

Would that work though?

If he can't get the 360 an assigned IP currently, then chances are his current modem will only connect when he uses it on the pc. Do you need to use any software to get online? Like on the old modems where you had to dial in. If you do, try going online on the pc and then plugging the 360 in to the modems ethernet port.

I doubt that will work though as your likely to have been given just the 1 IP, and the modem probably won't have NAT built in.

Easiest option would be to just buy an ADSL router, that way your always connected and can have as many devices as you like online at the same time.

Cheaper option is to stick another network card in your pc and setup Internet Connection Sharing. But then your pc will need to be on when you want to use the 360.

Blueyonder.

I thought that they were a cable operator, in which case you need a cable router not a adsl router.

Do you have a motorola surfboard modem ?

OcUK sell this for £30.

Linksys BEFSR41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch (NW-028-LS)

That would solve your issues in the easiest possible way.

Modem to the IN on the router. Router using ethernet cable to the 360 from one port and to the PC using another port.

No USB cabling involved.

I have tried connecting to my current cable modem using just the ethernet port and it won't work - it seemingly only works if the USB connection is in place.

It has been a long time since I set up my cable modem although I don't run it on USB.
I think you might have to dial into it 192.168.100.1 if it is the same as mine and reset the defaults.

Note the caveat:
Resetting the cable modem to its factory default configuration will remove all stored parameters learned by the cable modem during prior initializations. The process to get back online from a factory default condition could take from 5 to 30 minutes. Please reference the cable modem User Guide for details on the power up sequence

Can you google Motorla Surfboard Modem and see if it looks like yours?

To get the modem to work with your PC via the cat 5 you might have to enable DHCP in the config via 192.168.100.1

If you buy a router it should tell you what the routers default config page is in the manual or on the bottom of the router (least the netgear ones do) and you can configure from there.

No, that didn't work.

It can't seem to locate the "Ip Address".

IO was getting loads of connection erros when doing this, but had zonealarm blocking everything. Try turning off your firewall maybe?
