I have a 2009 version Xbox 360 so it's a fair bit old now. When playing games directly from the disc (Not from the HDD) the drive can get very loud and you can hear the drive reading the disc (clicking noises etc) however game play is absolutely fine and isn't affected at all.

Just wondering if this is normal for the older Xboxs?

Many thanks

Are you the guy who nit picks and eventually returns every single product you seem to ever buy? If so yes its normal and you are just being super duper sensitive as usual.

If not then its probably still normal.

I heard a rumor that the suggested fix for that was to place a breeze block underneath the machine or was that for the xbox...

You can install the games to hard disk in order to keep the noise down, although it does verify the disk for a few seconds. Sounds normal for a 360.

I have heard of people replacing the DVD drive with a quieter model with modded firmware but considering the risks of das ban hammer of Microsoft probably not recommended.

Or take the breeze block and repeatedly hit the Xbox until the noise stops :p

Mine sounds like a jet plane, with a flock of birds caught in the engine... so yes, normal.
