I had an xbox ages ago and needed to use transcode-360 to get my vidoes to playback when using the media centre extender. I since sold it but I was under the impression that a while back MS did an update which allowed avi file playback without the need for 3rd party apps. So i bought a new one recently but virtually all my videos cant be played on it, what exactly does it / should it support?

It will play avi, divx, and wmv. However if my memory is correct not all of these work in extenders mode. Instead you'll need to do it via the media tab thingy. The latest divx tech preview lets a lot more stuff work in extender mode. It may be worth checking out, though I think it may be windows 7 only.

I'm sure i set media centre mode up for my mate on his xbox and he could play back most of them. Literally none of my avi's playback.

I found the 360 media support very limiting so I have used tveristy now for quite some time and I am yet to find anything it can't stream. You can pick up a free copy from here:

TVersity & PS3MC both transcode MKV taking up quite a bit of system resources - was annoying trying to play games and the other 360 and brothers PS3 both started transcoding 10gb files.

windows 7 + divx7 for the win plays all my media including MKV files

This.
DivX Tech Preview is excellent, streams MKV files flawlessly with minimal system usage.

Shame PS3 doesn't support Media Centre or even Movies Library.

Should be able to play them - mine did all my .avi files by default, even ones with ac3 audio.

Trying playing one through the normal folder/library browser not Media Centre - it may download an update.

I can only play files from my PC on my 360 when my Xbox is signed in to Xbox Live. Are you signed in to Live when you are doing this?

Mine plays everything I've tried, however the 360 seems to crash a lot, I can still get into the guide and go back to the dashboard but the media center just stops responding.

Did the Video > Computer thingy and shared it within media player, it downloaded an update and plays everything through there. Still can't play them in media centre but not overly concerned as i can watch what i want the other way.
