Is there a way the xbox 360 can play Xvids off a dvd without having to connect to the net first?

No, you need to connect to the net to download the extra codecs.

Yes - Did you at any point get a new xbox via warranty/RROD? Or have you simply changed the xbox at some point? This usually causes this problem.

You will need to delete any Optional Media Updates on the xbox first.

Then create a new silver account, and sign in to live.

Then try and play the file from disc, which will trigger you to re-download the Optional Media Update.

You should then be able to play files from disc without being connected to live.

Simply deleting the Optional Media Update and redownloading it with your normal live account won't work. You must create a new account.

Ah yes, IF this is the first time you have tried to play the file, you will need to get the optional update. (and you should be able to play them offline from this point on)

If you find you need to be signed in to play the file (but already have the update), you will need to do as I posted above so you can play them in offline mode.

Its a friend s xbox, he had never updated it in two years, when I did that it now only allows me to play xvids, I will try above when I borrow his xbox weekend

Should work if you follow what I said. There's plenty of forum posts on other forums regarding this.

It boils down to DRM on that media update... Not quite sure it's needed....
