Im wanting to connect my 360 up to my Onboard soundcard alc882 (Asus A8R32-MVP) which has optical built in, i take it its just a case of buying an optical cable and linking them both up and the sound is then outputted to my 5.1 speakers as surround? any help with this would be much appreciated

If its onboard sound I'm guessing the optical port will only do output from your PC. You'll need an amp or something to hook your speakers and Xbox up to. Then again you could just buy speakers which support an optical connection.

If it's just a basic output on the soundcard, then you're not going to get 5.1 I'm afraid, or anything for that matter, as you'll need a Dolby Digital capable amplifier and speaker setup for that.
