XBOX 360 playing wmv files

I have some WMV files but my 360 will not play them. I can however play xvid/avi.

On the menu, I can see the starting screen of the WMV but there is a big cross next to it and when I go to play, it says it is unsupported ??

I thought the 360 could play WMV ?
 
It'll more than likely be one of the codecs used when the file was created.
I have a lot of trouble with Xvid 1.2.1 on the 360, breaks upa nd blocky but plays on PC fine.

any strange codecs used?
 
I havent got a version of media centre on my PC. At the moment to play any video files, I have the 360 sharing the ' my videos' folder.

Not sure if this would be the problem ?

One way to confirm if the file is the problem would be to put it onto a USB drive and read it directly through the 360. I would suspect some kind of codec issue with the file though. Just because it has a WMV file extension, doesn't mean it's been encoded correctly.

Welcome to the pathetically frustrating world of using the 360 as a media player. It's just an afterthought/ bolt-on media wise and a games machine (noisy one at that) first.

It's so buggy mine will play a file one day and then refuse to play it the next day... it's that bad tbh :rolleyes:
