Can anyone shed some light on this question please as I am considering buying a 360.

Will MS be releasing an updated 360 with a built in HD DVD player and an HDMI port and any other updates? If so should I wait for that to be released or shall I just buy a 360 now?

It already has a DVD-ROM.
I presume you mean HD-DVD?
As for HDMI and a built in HD-DVD, there is a rumour of a version 2 with HDMI.
I'd get one now, they are great, I really like mine :)

built in hd-dvd drive? No, no point when you can just buy the add-on if you really want it.

Apparantly a HDMI cable is gonna be released, not sure if it requires any changes in hardware though.

Basically dont hang around and just get one now.

What does the HDMI port do thats special? Play games in 1080p?
HDCP. It allows you to play protected content. It also is a lossless transfer method as all analogue signals lose some quality.

Protected content? Sorry Im a bit thick but what do you mean by protected content?

encrypted dvds and the like, part of the new hd-dvd copy protection iirc. i'm no expert but i cam across this article yesterday on the bbc site http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6301301.stm and a quote:

would not play on his monitor because it did not have the compliant connector demanded by the movie industry.

As part of the copy protection system on high-definition DVD, content providers can insist that movies will only play correctly if there are HDMI - or in some specific cases, compliant DVI - ports on the player and screen as these two connectors can handle the HDCP copy protection system.

well i guess that any changes will be in the 2nd gen model (not any earlier)
when sony are really starting to catch up

some time next year i guess.

Put simply, there is no scheduled release of an upgraded 360, there are rumours but no confirmation from Microsoft or anyone in the know.

If you want a 360 then Id say there may be good deals to have when the PS3 comes out, as most of the good bundle deals from Xmas time have long gone.

HD movies will apparently require a HDMI interface to play them at full quality. 1080p is available via VGA and Component.

remember reading ages ago that if the film has HDCP and you play it via a non HDCP tv or cable then it will automactially downscale the image to 480p. Don't know how much truth was in that though as this was over a year ago.

If I were you i'd buy the 360 now.

MS are releasing a HD-DVD player for the xbox 360 but there will be no new version of the xbox 360 the HD-DVD comes out in march for it and it will cost around 90 pounds. ;)

This wouldn't be the same HD-DVD player that was released last November?
