I have just returned my Xbox for the second time this year. I went back to the shop with everything including my old 20gb hard drive and was given a brand new box with a 60gb hard drive :D Ive lost my game saves but that just gives me a good reason to play through some of the old stuff ;)

man you are so lucky. kinda want mine to have the red ring so i can get a bigger harddrive :D mine still going strong had it for about 2yrs now maybe more

I think I need a new 360 also. I get way too many disc read errors.

If I buy a new core/arcade (whatever it is called :p) console does anyone know if I can just take my hard drive and attach it to the new one. Will this transfer my live account, downloaded games, game saves and all info etc?

Thanks

What shop was this,

I tried returning my Xbox to Argos as it wouldnt read disks anymore but they just fobbed me off with the microsoft help line even though this was within the 1st year.

Yes, the hard drive will work fine on another console. However if you want to use any of your XBLA games and other DLC while not signed into Live, you'll need to use the transfer tool which MS offer on their site somewhere to transfer all your licenses to the new console.

However, disc read errors are quite simple to sort out. The first port of call should be a new laser which you can grab off a popular auction site for around £10. They're dead simple to fit (tutorials are easy to come across) and will most likely fix your issue. Don't bother trying the POT tweak - it might work for a while but when a new laser is so cheap, why bother?

If that doesn't solve your issue, you could just buy a new DVD drive of the same model (usually about £30) and then swap the controller PCBs over. This way you don't need to mess around with firmware flashing (even legitimately).

A little more hassle than buying a new console maybe, but it's still worth trying to save some cash :)

The shop was a high street store with a purple logo that only sells game s ;)

My first Xbox gave up after 6 months and it was swapped over no questions asked, this one I had used since January so 10 months on and no question again. Perfect customer service.

Xbox is currently updating :)

I thought that all of my achievements and unlocks would have dissapeared, but after setting up and running the update I loaded Bad Company onto the new drive and hey presto all of my unlockes were there ;)

So much better than having to find a box, take it to the post office, and wait for ages!

Really?

I don't know about you but finding a box isn't exactly difficult. Also, when I sent mine back UPS collected it from me at work, and then delivered it back to me at work within 10 days.

It wasn't exactly a stressful time!
