Xbox 360 Resolution Question

Hello All :)

I'm currently using a BenQ GL2750HM 27 inch Widescreen LED Monitor for both my PC and Xbox 360.

I am using a HDMI - HDMI connection for the Xbox but can't help but notice a massive decrease in quality (lots of jaggies and blurriness) and also a lot of tearing/ghosting at 1080P

Any ideas why this might be happening?

Thanks :)

Tav.

The 360 dash is quite pixellated at 1080p for me too, 720p looks much better though.

Even so, I just tried the Gears: Judgment demo and the game just looks absolutely shocking and it's almost as if the game is running at about 10fps (I think it's the tearing/jaggies that is making it this way)

Edit: I remember using a VGA cable with a previous 360 and the picture quality was far more superior, would it be worth investing in another one and seeing if that improves my problem?

I've gone ahead and ordered one of the HD VGA cables anyway, It was only a few quid, Let's hope I can get the picture quality I had on a previous system!

I just can't get my head around why it would look worse on HDMI as that's what my PC is running at without a hitch.

I believe the majority of the games are rendered at 720p- the Xbox just outputs at 1080p. Games like Halo 3 are actually not HD as they are rendered at 11xx *6xx (can't remember the exact resolution).

As said above, the 360 has a scaler chip that upscales the native 720p resolution up to 1080p. Not perfect, but a better solution than having no scaler at all.

The Xbox 360 doesnt have true 1080p... it's like a 'fake' version of it it has true 720p but not 1080... stick to 720p its better becasue the 360 games are to that resolution not 1080p :)

It's not hard coded - it'll scale anything to anything pretty much. I'm running via a VGA cable at 1680x1050 (as it's the only way to get the correct aspect on a 1920x1200 Dell 2412UM).

So the VGA cable might be a better option for improved image quality and less tearing?

In my case yes as there's no 1:1 pixel mode on that monitor. An HDMI to DVI cable gives an incorrect aspect ratio.

When I compared VGA vs HDMI on my TV then the HDMI had better colours and was more clearly defined. YMMV - depends on the display. I can't see why the same resolution at the same refresh rate would tear on one connector and not the other unless it's a side effect of whatever image processing the display might be applying.

I mainly play Forza 4 which runs at 60Hz. Can't abide FPS on the Xbox as you can't use a keyboard and mouse!

This isn't quite accurate. The 360 has the ability to output true 1080p. However, most of the time it is upscaling from a lower resolution. Even the dashboard is upscaled, which is strange. But there are a small handful of games (probably less than 10) that render in true 1080p, such as Virtua Tennis 3 and FIFA Street 3. The vast majority run at 720p or even lower.
