Hi,

This might be in the wrong section so apologies if it is...

I recently got a new TV ( Sony KDL40W5710) and hooked up my xbox 360 via component. Set at 1080i the picture is really sharp and looks great, however when I try and set the 360 to 1080p, the picture looks very blurry and in particular the text is 'ghosting' badly. Note - this is just in the main menu, I've not even tried 1080p in games yet.

Should 1080p work fine with a component lead or do you need HDMI? If it should work with component does anyone know what the problem might be?

Thanks

i havent tried it myself as i have hdmi but i hear that it should work fine, if i were you i would just set it to 720p tho like i did as its just upscaled anyway and some games like resident evil 5 get horrible screen tearing at 1080p

1080i seems to be fine, so presumably I'm better off using that then 720p? Or doesn't it matter? :)

Sony Tv's will only accept 1080p over digital connections. The best your going to get is 720p or 1080i.

Depending on how good the deinterlacer is on the TV, one or the other will look best but most people go for 720p.

Well at least that clears that up, cheers for the info! :)

i assume you arent including vga in that statement lol

Tried 720p and that had similar results to 1080p just not quite as bad. So think I'll stick with 1080i for now has that looks awesome :)

I'll try a friends xbox and different cable when I can to see if it's one of them that's the problem, although I doubt it.

Yes I think so, although I bought it so long ago I can't really remember. But it is the one with the 'greeny/grey' braiding. Pretty sure its the official one.

Hi

That doesnt sound like its the official microsoft component cable it should have microsoft stamped into the connecter if its not i reccomend you buy the official one because some of the third party cables are really rubbish.

I bet its your cable that is giving you all this picture trouble 1080p component should look great.

Just checked and think I don't have the official cable!

I've just realised though, I also have the VGA cable. Am I better off using that?

Thanks

Tried VGA cable (which is official), set to 1920 x 1080, and it looks sweet. Is this the same as 1080p?

Sorry a bit clueless with all this HD stuff! :p

I am, I know of no Sony TV (UK)that will accept 1080p over VGA, the ADC (analog to digital converters) made sets more expensive plus Sony seems to be more worried about HDCP than others.

So 1080p is only achieved via HDMI
