Have a 360 which RROD about 6months ago if not more, wasn't too bothered as I was final year at uni and wasn't playing it much. However wouldn't mind reviving it for the odd mess around, may as well rather than the expense of buying new.

I remember an old thread about X-clamps I think it was but couldnt find it. Basically someone bought a repair kit off the bay and it sorted their 360 out for a few months. Any idea who is reliable off ebay or elsewhere? Is there any point or is it likely to break in 5mins after 'fixing' it?

Thing is, you'll need Torx screwdrivers and parts. Would it not be just as cheap to send it away for £60 to MS?

Did this with a Xbox after it RROD, 2 months later and RROD again next stop was the local dump.

Not worth it as it's a 50/50 chance of it happening again. It's damn annoying when it does though.

Xclamped an old rrod console then gave it away to my nephew, 2 years on it's still going strong.

Very easy to do also.

who/where did you get the xclamp from and does it require special tools outside of what would be used for PC building for example?

get the kits off ebay, and its torx 10, i think, you can cut a plastic dvd cake box thing to open the tabs with to.

Costs about £5 for all the tool pieces and parts from ebay, mine has been done for about a year now, and still going strong.

Just done one of these myself. Paid £6 for the opening kit, torx screwdrivers and xclamp mod kit which is washers and thermal paste. Easy to do, didn't take long and it's still working a month after doing it. Dead chuffed at the cost of the fix.

My Xbox is still going strong with the xclamp fix over a year after its initial failure.
For the cost and the relatively short amount of time it takes, it's definitely worth it.

Thank you very much mate, think I'll put in an order now :)

Ordered yesterday, received my kit today. Just doing the overheating step at the minute and will report back once I'm finished. So far the Xbox is booting up, which is always a good start.

The hardest part of this process was getting the Xclamps off - I had visions of spearing the motherboard with a screwdriver...

Seems to be working like a dream. Banged on a nice thin layer of Arctic Silver 5, followed the instructions and hey presto, one working 360.

how the hell did u get the current studs off the heatsink? Been going at it with a set of pliers for yonks and none of them are moving, not happy!
