Xbox 360 & Separate HD Player or PS3??

Yeah they both rely heavily on their streaming capabilities at the minute i totally agree. Mine mostly is used to stream music, so really I dont know w the drawbacks for movies as i dont watch divX films etc, i save all that for the laptop, which is proof on its own i suppose that i wouldnt rely on either console for that purpose.

I have heard rumours of *** PS3 getting Xvid (or was it divX) support in *** near future, but i dont think anything is solid yet. The main thing that i think will push the media capabilities of the PS3 is that ive seen a digital TV tuner for the PS3 being released, which will make the console much better for its media capabilities.

PS3 simply because of the noise factor,
the xbox is very loud and in movies where there are silent bits it gets annoying as it kind of ruins the atmosphere.
I dont use my xbox for movies anymore tbh, i just plugged in my media pc again

it kind of defeats the point shelling out a couple of grand on a descent sound system for crisp quality when you have a small vacuum cleaner going in the background :p

Blu ray and hd dvd drive for the PC + cheapest xbox for the odd pes game with your mates then?

I actualy decided to just go with the PC only option since i'm not much of a gamer either and only really ever play PES so all I needed to buy was 2x xbox gamepads

The Xbox360 is quiet during DVD playback.

check out the specs of your tv first of all
my 1080p lg 37lf66 claims to output at 24p but i get *judder* and this kind of ruins the blu-ray experience for me (i have ps3 and 360)
im not sure how many 1080p tv's will do 1080p at 24hz, most will not
ideally you would want a 120hz tv but these are pricey and few and far between

i beleive this is not a problem with 720p tv's but ive not hooked my ps3 up to mines to test

Go for the 360. You'll be able to play more games, add an hd-dvd drive at a later point and you still have room left after buying it to buy a blu ray drive for your pc. (Which makes the point about 360 drives being noisy moot for movies if he's running them off his pc)

Unless you really want Blu-Ray, then get the PS3 cause its probably the cheapest Blu-Ray player out and can play games too.

But i would personally go for the 360 and the HD-DVD addon drive. It will work out cheaper cause you could just buy the 360 Core (or Arcade or whatever its called now) if your just a light gamer and get a 512mb memory card.

EDIT: Or even get a Blu-Ray disc drive for your pc and hook it up to your TV. You could still play games on it and turn it into a media center too.

If movies are your main concern, just get the ps3. There are loads of great games for it now, and while there are more for the 360, there is a good amount of quality on the playstation. The main problem with ps3 games is that if you own a 360 there isnt many worth buying, but without owning a 360, there are loads.

For DVD/Blu-Ray the PS3 is the obvious choice.

Although you should checkout what format you prefer, whether it be HDDVD or Blu-Ray.

For games the 360 is the better option at present but if your only a light gamer then the PS3 has more than enough games to enjoy.

The biggest possistive the PS3 has over the 360/PC route is the fact that it's so much quiter.

How will it, he'd still be playing games and movies from his Xbox360, the PS3's Blu-Ray drive would be in the PC. If he did it the other way around he'd have less noise.

Cheers for the responses guys. Some interesting thoughts.

One thing that might seal it though... I forgot to mention that I won't be buying speakers for the TV. Instead I'll be using the 7.1 speakers attached to my pc. So if I did buy a PS3 and used the bluray on that, then I'd have to use the built-in tv speakers until I get enough cash to buy a nice set of speakers for that (Which won't be for a while). So if I bought a separate blu-ray drive for my pc, I'd still be able to get the good sound. I guess this would suggest then getting the xbox360.

But obviously I'm still open to thoughts.
