XBox 360 Setup Question

I have a ethernet faceplate which I currently have my HTPC wired into. I now have an Xbox 360 which I'd also like to share this faceplate. As neither one will be used at the same time is it just as simple as buying an RJ45 splitter and plugging that into the faceplate or do I need to buy a switch? If a switch is needed how are the powered? Don't really want to have anything else plugged in if I can help it.

I believe a splitter would work fine and every switch I have seen has been has been externally powered.

Just tried a splitter and it didn't work. Might have to get a cheap switch now.
