As the older Xbox 360 had heating problems, I was wondering if the slim has had this corrected?

I am unable to find anything on the web about anybody having opened up the case to confirm one way or the other yet.

It will be a gift to my son in a couple of months.

Probably not much information on it because it's not happening or too early to say. They will have no doubt improved it, but even so, they always replace them for any issues that arise, so I wouldn't let it put you off buying one.

Mine's standing upright and really surprised that it's warm to the touch, not hot, just warm and that's after having played MW2 for 3 hours. There isn't anything around it though but it's in a pretty warm room with my PC on and it being above my pc means that it's just using the hot air off that.

The CPU and GPU are now on one core instead of on two, in addition the process has been reduced so that the overall footprint is smaller and it can run at lower voltages. All of that results in less heat being generated so it really shouldnt happen with the new ones. It shouldn't have happend with the old ones but thats another story...

they shut down if they get to hot now, not heard of anyone having problems apart from the trools covering up the fan and putting videos on youtube

NOT HOTLINKING

*Waits for a YouTube video of a 360 slim in a wind tunnel displaying this warning*
