Hi guys,

I've bought an xbox 360 HD VGA lead and apparantly it has a "optical output" on the cable. My motherboard sound card has an "Optical S/PDIF output".

I would like to know, are these things the same things? Also, my computer is connected to my stereo so would it be easy to connect the xbox to the computer and then from the computer have the sound coming out of my stereo?

Also, what cable would I need to do this if it's even possible?

I'm not really sure of the best way to link in the sound.

Thanks

The VGA cable does indeed have and optical output, its situated on the connector that goes into your Xbox right next to the cable that goes to the TV.

You need an optical cable to connect it to any source, if you are wanting to connect it through your PC, then from the PC to your stereo your PC will need to have an optical input socket, not an output socket.

Connecting it like you mention above means your PC will need to be on all the time.

How do you have your PC connected to your stereo, optical or coax?

Cheers for the reply Stu

At the moment there is like an aux lead that comes out of the sound card and then splits into two jacks (L) - (R). Once it's split it then runs into the stereos appropriate jacks.

What do you think would be the best method of getting sound from my xbox?

Does your stereo have optical input? Or is it just phono?

The Xbox VGA cable should come with the kit to allow you to either plug it in to a separate auxilary in on the stereo, or plug it in to the Line-In on your PC Sound card.

When I have my Xbox connected to my PC rather than my TV, I have the VGA cable connected to the Line-in on my PC soundcard so that the sound plays out of my PC speaker system, and all the right bits came with the VGA cable when I bought it. The only thing I had to do is buy an extension for the sound as my PC is too far from the monitor for the cable to reach.

Cheers Dave,

My stereo only has phono leads unfortunately, I'll guess I will understand a bit more when the cable itself comes.

What type of cable are you using to connect it to the line in on your sound card? I thought the only out on the cable was an optical one?

I made this diagram ages ago. Basically the phono to 3.5mm connector goes in to your soundcard (rather than the speakers). The 3.5mm coupler is not needed in this case, as it is only needed if you're connecting to headphones/speakers directly.

Hope this is clear enough.

Thanks Dave,

I've just bought a couple of RCA adapters so my plan is to use the L - R output from the VGA cable and using the adapters (splitters) connect it to my stereo similar to how my PC sound is running at the moment, That way I won't need to leave my PC whilst playing the console.

Thanks for the info, I'll be sure to let you know how it goes when these adapters come and most probably poke you for some more information! :)
