I just recieved my replacement console today (only took 4 months), and the first thing i checked was whether it contained the old Hitachi or newer Samsung DVD drive, which is supposed to be quieter. I was very happy to see it contained the Samsung, but when i put a game in it turned out to be louder than my old one!! :(

How about you, fellow Samsung DVD drive owners? Is yours loud? Or is this just sods law at work?

Which ones which again ? :p

I recently received a replacement console as well, it seems much quiet than my old one though.

My first relacement was much quieter in all ways. Sadly I'm struggling to get past why it took four months for a replacement. I would be demanding money off and a four month warranty extension.

Whappers.

The first month was due to them having my 'county' in their system as Birmingham, even though im in Lancashire and Birmingham isnt a county. Took them a while to discover this, even though i confirmed my address with them twice before they noticed. So when the shipping labels were being sent, they would just end up going nowhere.
Then they sorted that out but for some reason the shipping labels still weren't being sent. They had my home address, email address, home phone number and mobile number. It seemed like every time i rang, they would instantly forget about me.
It even took them 3 attempts to send the shipping labels by email! I would get a confirmation email first, but then the actual shipping label would not end up being sent to me.

I rang up a total of 10 times IIRC, and every time they would be very apologetic and promise me that it would be sorted. But for some reason, nothing would happen after the phone call.

When i eventually got my shipping label by email, it was all done very quick.

Does anyone think i should ring up and demand something out of this? They have my long history on their computers, maybe i should get this loud one replaced again? Maybe some points to spend on live??

Mines the Hitachi and its like a rocket jet taking off, loudest game by far is Splinter Cell. Sounds like my house is going to fall down :D

Debating moaning to MS to see if I can get a replacement before the 12 months is up, Anyone got a replacement without actually having any problems? MS strict about it?

Whats the manufacture date of yours? My new one is from December 2005.

Is there any way of finding this out without taking your Xbox 360 apart?

Edit: do you mean the manufacture date of the drive or the console or both?

Whappers.

I'll check my Xbox 360 manufacture date when I get home and just hope that I get a quiet Samsung drive / Xbox 360!

Mine seems to be a Sammy then, the xbox was manufactured September this year.

Whisper quiet in comparison to my December '05 Hitachi

You'd think after keeping me waiting for 4 months they would send me a newer console :( im definitely ringing them again tomorrow.

a lot of the new 360 consoles have the hitachi drives in them, no way of telling untill you open the drive and check the drive tray against the pics of the 2 drives.

You might have a job on your hands convincing them to get it replaced just because it is louder I think. I mean from their point of view it is not technically faulty while I can still see your point that it is not acceptable to get an older, louder console after a 4 month wait. I wish you the best of luck phoning them and hopefully you'll get a quieter console.

Ive just done a quick google search, it turns out many people with the 'quiet' Samsung drive actually think it is very loud.

I have also noticed that my console makes a rather strange grinding/crunching/scratching noise when putting in or taking out a disc  doesn't really bother me since my games are in one piece, but is this also normal?

Just got my 360 premium afew days ago, checking the drive from the pics above mines the Hitachi.

I play at night with the volume on quite low, and yes its loud, very loud. Tbh thats probably the ONLY thing I dislike about the 360, everything else is bang on, very happy with it so far :)

I got mine a few days ago and its a Samsung. Its pretty quiet but its all relative. It is still louder than the PS2 and X-Box but its not really loud loud (if that makes sense).

not all samsungs are quiet some are louder and have more seek noise, also samsungs tend to speed up and slow down more than hitachi's which give slight pausing, stuttering in certain games as the disc is being read, i have noticed this where as Hitachi's seem to be reading at constant speed. Liteon is making the new drives very soon so we see if things improve or get worse

My brother has the newer Samsung drives, but his is just as loud as my Hitachi one.

I honestly don't mind the noise though, at all. Same goes for my computer too.
