Hooked my Xbox up via my home network to my PC, and I've shared by video files which the Xbox can see, but not play. It says I need to sign into Xbox Live then play the file again, presumably to get an update? (I've got a 360 Elite bought in Dec 08).

I've not registered to Xbox Live and I don't plan to either, is there a way I can get this update without a subscription, or another way to play media files?

Xbox live Silver Membership is free, and allows you access to Xbox Live to get the updates :)

There is also a rather large update, That will give you whats called the NXE dashboard.

If you've not yet registered to xbox live then like wannabe says silver is free or you could register a gamertag then get a months free gold subscription. Either way you'll get your updates :)

Ind3h! has the best suggestion for you, you get one month free gold membership and use that to update your system. Also when you try to play a few files if you haven't got the codec it will download those for you as well.

Without Live as far as I know I don't think you can update it.

I didn't realise there was a free Silver option, I take it you can opt for this when going through the registration process?

Cheers guys.

as soon as you create a gamer tag you should get a month's worth of gold sub for free which then reverts back to silver (the standard one) after the 30 days are up. registering doesnt ask you for any card details etc AFAIK?

eitherway I would do it just for the updates if nothing else. a lot has changed with regards to the dash since it was originally released and IMO has got a lot better thanks to updates :)

The gold subscription basically gives you access to play games online with people, video chat and the ability to download a few demo's a week or so before everyone with a silver subscription. Aside from that both gold and silver are pretty much the same

Good to see it sorted. You might want to try out every file you got just in case there is a codec you might be missing but I only had to download a codec once and never again.

Any reason you're not getting XBOX live Gold? For ~£30 a year I think it is pretty good value and playing online is brilliant.

I got the Xbox for Christmas, to be honest I'm not much of a gamer and I don't use it all that much (3/4 times a week) so I'm not really fussed about online gaming. I've been playing the Lego games which are good fun and me & the Mrs like driving games.
