xbox controller on a PC

I think my falt with 360 controller was all but my fault, I've tried to charge normal batteries using the charge kit, no wander my controller was switching itself randomly off, seems to be fine now since I used proper rechargable unit. This is what happens when you have too many contorllers :)

Am currently using an old Xbox (non 360) controler that i cut the plug off and soldered a usb lead to :) works sweet as a nut with XBMC installed.

A side question on this topic: I was messing around with PS3 and XBOX360 controllers a while ago in an attempt to get one working in Windows (I gave up in the end and got a cheapo dualshockalike which does the job nicely.) What doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere is that the standard wireless 360 pad is recognised by Windows when attached via the play&charge lead.

Sadly, for me at least, recognition is as far as it goes. Windows recognises it, downloads drivers, and that's it. It's not recognised in the joystick cpl or anywhere else - the only way you can tell it's there is to go to Device Manager and check what's attached to the USBs.

Anyone have any insight into this? (Vista x64, if that makes any diference ^^)

The play and charge kit is only used for charging the controller not connecting it to the pc.
To use a wireless 360 pad with windows you need to buy a xbox 360 crossfire receiver.

I bought a second hand xbox 360 controller from the jersey site as it said it was wired however when i recived it today it doesnt look like its wired, just chucked it into my pc and it said it was connected by a charge n play lead, which is a bit of a bummer.
