Xbox controllers keep going unresponsive

On my living room HTPC (Kaveri APU based A8-7600 and ASRock FM2A88M-HD+ system) I have two wireless Xbox 360 controllers connecting to an MS IR receiver so the boys can access their shared Steam libraries and play some games.

This works well - when it works. The problem I have is that every two or three weeks the controllers will just stop working - in that they'll act as though they're not paired with the receiver. Trying to pair will just result in the lights on both controllers and receiver flashing without pairing becoming successful.

The only solution I've found to this is to unplug and reconnect the receiver from the USB port. This is a pain, though, as it means pulling the PC out a bit, reaching around the back and locating the plug by touch to disconnect and reconnect it. Restarting the system doesn't resolve this issue - only reconnecting the USB for the receiver does.

As this happened when I was away last week the boys couldn't use the system at all as I wasn't there to do this.

Any ideas for what I can try to resolve this?

Well, in the short term/ easy solution, get a usb extension and leave it accessible.

Devices that need inserting again to be recognised are a pain, I've had this where something eventually stops working after it's been tried in every usb port.

Yeah, that's probably a good solution. I do have a spare USB extension anyway, so it's not going to cost anything to do that.

I was hoping there'd be a permanent solution, but yeah I've had issues with devices being picky about USB ports before, so maybe it's just something we have to live with?

I think so. Don't tell anyone but I hate computers
