xbox dashboard update.

No I used a program which I thought re-encoded it, took several hours anyway. Maybe you can just rename the file extension?

You can't what you did is the only way, depending on PC spec and parameters it should not take that long. On a semi modern PC the content should re-encode in real time (ie 20 minute clip should take 20 mins or less to recode).

Anyway, I digress, I am stuck at work, who is going to chek if we have any new HD VideoMarketPlace content for me?

I don't care about this xvid stuff, but it sounds like a good compromise to me. Yes it doesn't work through media centre extenders, but more people will have access through WMP11 in my opinion. Looking forward to pressing all the new buttons and the faster dashboard!!!

I don't want to convert nor transcode. I also do not like installing "codec packs" and what not. I just use VLC and everything works perfectly, be it XViD with 5.1 or 1080p mkv with 5.1 and subs.

Will stick to that TBH.

I suspect you are like me, in that your 360 and PC are connected to the same machine, so this is still the best solution (all you do is change channels). VLC f t w I suppose (or MACOSX + Perian for me from one machine and VLC +windows from the other :D).

And H.264 pees all over this crappy xvid/divx rubbbish (imo)

Couldn't you have just demuxed it in a matter of seconds? Unless the video within the container was an unsupported format as well?

I wouldn't have had any idea what that was or how to do it, I just searched for a one click solution (pretty sure it was Videora thinking about it).

Anyway, point is it worked fine and did the job in question, took an h264 .mkv and turned it into something the 360 understood.

I use FFDshow, Which is awesome also.

Indeed. I may demux some H264 (mkv container) files tonight to see if they will play on 360 (I think with the mkv files *** H.264 video is OK, but the AC3 audio is the problem so a 10 minute demux will fix that rather than a 1 hourish re-encode)

I love fiddling with new stuff!!!

Already done this on my PS3, nice to see it can be done on 360 now as well. (Heroes in 720P on my PS3!!! and now maybe on the 360 too!!)

I used to use my 360 heavily for transcoding and it's simply brilliant tbh. On vista you'll never even notice it there because it can run as a service. However the lack of decent FF/Rewind control (no fault of MS) ended up with me hooking up the PC to my 32" Sammy HDTV and using it as a secondary screen to watch films on. What is FF/Rewind like on Xvid/Divx content at present?

Just went on with my US account, they have way more stuff to download, probably all rubbish tho :p

Do us a list of the movies kind sir!!!!

I know we can't expect the TV shows for now, but films I would be interested in seeing a comparison (just for curiousity, I know a lot of it is licensing distribution rights). For once I am grateful for what we have been given!!! :D

So any other current xbox original owners thinking of a 360 now?

I'll be very tempted once I get an hdtv.

I don't think the 360 software will ever have a look-in on XBMC. Playing DVD ISO's, streaming multi-split RAR files, add-on scripts, it's such a complete piece of software. Some will be happy to sacrifice a lot of this though for the sake of getting rid of a box under the TV :)

And the fact, to my knowledge, XBMC does not support H264 is a bonus for people who want decent HD material.

I have just tried this with a 720p .mkv Heroes episode and it doesn't work. Atleast using WMP11 to share them with the 360. I tried (when merging the video and audio tracks together) renaming the output file to and .avi and an .mp4 but neither showed up when i tried to add them to the WMP library. Hmmm...bit more fiddling with this is required

Yeah, switch between HDMI and VGA on it then take my keyboard/mouse to bed and load up VLC. Don't want to install loads of codecs in system, have icons appear in my taskbar when I can use VLC and never have to worry about anything else. I cannot see any real alternative to be honest (tried a lot) to substitute a PC connected to a LCD to play media.

What's with the smart-ass reply.

My point still stands. It'll be a while before I'll ever dump my original XBox, the above only being a couple of points. There's so much more in terms of file support and general functionality.
Anyway, it's possible through editing a conf file to get it to play H264 but people have stated it being choppy and dropping frames - it's more down to hardware limitations than anything. Considering it's running a 733mhz processor and 64mb RAM it's doing not too bad (1ghz+ is recommended for h264), it'll still be my preferred media player for a long time.

Thats exactly what kills it for me, Was watching something the other day, Paused it. And when I restarted it, The whole thing started to jump around on me. So i tried to rewind it, No luck. Ended up having to watch the whole episode again from the beginning. Didn't mind too much as I got to see a second helping of Miss Panettiere :p

But in other things, I'm sure it could get annoying.

Anyways, Fingers crossed things work fine tonight.
