xbox dashboard update.

XVid/DivX streaming has been possible for the XBox 360 for a while now, albeit with an extra lil program running to do the converting for you. This update should make the whole process much more friendly now, nice one M$ for listening to demand for a change... which is odd really don't you think?

It would be nice to be able to pop in a dvd filled with xvid's and play them (or better still a usb hard drive), rather than than having the stream them.

What time is this update supposed to be coming then?

EDIT: Sorry, just saw in another post - 2am PST, 10am GMT.

Lucky dog. Just switched mine on and nowts happened yet. Does it only check at sign in or will the update get pushed as long as you stay logged in, I wonder...

There's also an extra update (a few meg) when you first try to play MPEG4 (divx/xvid) movies ... that's downloading now for me

Edit: And that's divx files playing happily off of a CD-R. Cheers Microsoft :D

Try going to the system blade and doing a live connection test, that normally forces it.

I thought Divx/xvid was .avi, not mpeg4. You could play .mp4 files before the dash update, but that still required a small download.

.avi is a "container" - a file that contains both audio and video segments, and the segments can be compressed with various codecs.

divx and xvid are MPEG4 video codecs, which are now supported with today's updates - in both .avi and .divx "containers"(file types)

So can you now use files with the .avi container?

Yes, as long as the video codec used is MPEG4 based, ie divx or xvid.....
Other video codecs aren't supported.

To test, I just burnt a few divx encoded .avi's to a CD-R and they worked no problem :)

To quote the video blog at http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archive/2007/11/30/december-2007-video-playback-faq.aspx:

Xbox 360 supports the following for AVI:

· File Extensions: .avi, .divx
· Containers: AVI
· Video Profiles: MPEG-4 Part 2, Simple & Advanced Simple Profile
· Video Bitrate: 5 Mbps with resolutions of 1280 x 720 at 30fps. See question number 11 for more information.
· Audio Profiles: Dolby® Digital 2 channel and 5.1 channel, MP3
· Audio Max Bitrate: No restrictions. See question number 11 for more information.

And DRAT!

For some stupid reason, the 360 won't play these new files unless it's signed in to Xbox Live. I quite often take my 360 away with me on trips so I can watch vids or play games. It seems it's restricted to WMVs only when not connected.
