Late last year after quite a lengthy Portal 2 session with my eldest son my xbox started playing up. Either hanging on start-up or showing the 3 RROD. I did some research into the problem and ended up removing the x-clamp and used some standard screws and washers to fit the heatsink. Then heated it up for a couple of hours and put it back together. It's worked fine since although I generally don't play for long periods.

On Sunday my eldest son spent a couple of hours playing Ben 10, he did leave it on and paused for an hour or so in the middle too. Since then it's started misbehaving again, no RROD's but the console hung in FIFA 3 times and now hangs on start-up.

I'm a little confused, I thought removing the x-clamp should stop the overheating issue from occurring again. All I can think of doing is opening it up, tightening the screws on the heatsink and overheating it again but I don't want to have to keep doing this every couple of months. Is there something else I should be doing?

Might be best to just buy a new or second hand one i still have a jasper model 360 still going strong although it been shoved into Lian Li XB-01B Black Aluminium Quiet Case for the past few years:o

Thought I fixed it but it's started crashing constantly again :(. I presume the thin ones aren't susceptible to the overheating issue and are a lot quieter?

Apologies, I didn't realise you were an official Microsoft spokesperson.

Rumours still suggest end 2013 early 2014. But they are of course, only rumours.

the fact that sony have officially announced final specs and MS haven't even announced anything would suggest that they are far away from a launch. also i do not think 2 consoles have ever launched at the same time before, 2 major consoles anyway.

Hmm thanks, will check it out.

PS4 is scheduled to launch this christmas for £399 if you can wait but it may be delayed. It's also supposedly going to be the better of the 2 next gen consoles, but as said above MS haven't announced anything yet, it's all just rumours on MS's end. I believe they have been caught out by Sony and are playing catch up now.

OP, I would just pick up a used barebones arcade console of ebay and use your existing controller, hard drive, cables etc. You could pick one up for ~£40 and that should see you through to next gen. No point paying out for a new one this late imo.

I went through 3 Xboxes in 2 years so ditch it and went with a PS3 and i've not looked back since.

£40 and zero warranty or £100 with warranty? i think it's worth it for the brand new one, he could sell his controller, cables, hard drive, etc to make up the difference.

When is the new xbox due?
I think from Microsoft's track record, it would be unwise to buy the first production run of the next Xbox. To be honest, I'd say the same about the PS4 too. I remember when the PS3 came out at £425 in the UK. I bought a second revision model less than a year later brand new for £230. Was a mighty good deal, but it happens. That PS3 is still sat next to me, whereas many of the launch models are getting YLODs.

Early adopters are mad I tell you!;)

Grab a slim, I've been through 4 standard xboxs before hand. Had no issues at all, and it gets some hammer on my days off. :)
