Late last year after quite a lengthy Portal 2 session with my eldest son my xbox started playing up. Either hanging on start-up or showing the 3 RROD. I did some research into the problem and ended up removing the x-clamp and used some standard screws and washers to fit the heatsink. Then heated it up for a couple of hours and put it back together. It's worked fine since although I generally don't play for long periods.
On Sunday my eldest son spent a couple of hours playing Ben 10, he did leave it on and paused for an hour or so in the middle too. Since then it's started misbehaving again, no RROD's but the console hung in FIFA 3 times and now hangs on start-up.
I'm a little confused, I thought removing the x-clamp should stop the overheating issue from occurring again. All I can think of doing is opening it up, tightening the screws on the heatsink and overheating it again but I don't want to have to keep doing this every couple of months. Is there something else I should be doing?

. I presume the thin ones aren't susceptible to the overheating issue and are a lot quieter?
